Major Western governments are re-considering their choices in Libya and the ways they should handle the turbulent situation in the country. This comes four years after the eruption of the Libyan revolution and the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi, decisively aided by the NATO intervention.
Libya’s geo-strategic significance mainly lies in its proximity to the southern European shores, making it the gateway for the flood of migrants into Europe at times of instability. Additionally, there is the omnipresent danger of the expanding influence of armed militias and the fact that Libya is an oil-rich country which is an important factor in the struggle for power.
