Domestic, sectarian, sexual and political violence rates have skyrocketed recently. Violence in Egyptian society draw inspiration from traditional street quarrels: In those quarrels, men and youth rapidly join either to disperse the fighting or to inflame it as women passionately observe those clashes from afar. Masculinity is determined by the ability to respond to an attack and courage is measured by the ability to take law into one’s own hands.
The different forms of violence have saturated Egyptian schools, but physical and verbal violence remain the most prevalent. Reflecting the dominant culture, violence is more common among male students than among female students. It is also more common in public school than in private ones.
