It is possible to note the reality of political divisions in Palestine, as well as the permanent economic crises of the Palestinian Authority, through the political participation in the student councils in some West Bank universities, such as An-Najah National University in Nablus. Palestinian universities in the occupied Palestinian territories have always reflected the situation of the Palestinian society and political culture in general. First, it is necessary to observe the economic background of Palestinian higher education in order to elucidate present reality.
In 2008, the share of higher education of the overall budget dedicated to education in the OPT barely reached 55 per cent. This is one of the lowest percentages in the world.
