Mauritania’s miners won the battle against Kinross Gold, the Canadian corporation that owns and runs Tasiast Mauritania, a gold mine located 300 kilometers north of the capital Nouakchott.
The strike, which lasted less than one week, forced the corporationto surrender to miners’ demands after months of procrastination. The corporation finally retreated and agreed to sign an agreement with representatives of the striking miners. The miners went on strike in protest of the increase in working hours imposed upon them by the corporation.
