Sufism in Egypt: Between Traditional Roots and Modern manifestations

The social manifestation of Islam is made up of several groups, the majority of which are interlaced with deeply-rooted traditions. These groups mostly share general manners and rituals in terms of determining their communication with their surroundings.
These groups have, in one way or another, played a role until this day in shaping the political contexts in most Arab countries. 
The recent revolutions paved the way for change through the creation of a space of departure from the failing models offered by Arab countries after their independence. Yet, the revolutions equally allowed mass communities to remodel the discourses of traditional religious groups. Those discourses are presented to societies hit by intellectual and developmental crises with the aim of adapting and investing them in the new realities.

A look back at past decades presumes a relationship between political Islam that is hostile to the national state on the one hand, and the increasing need of those national states to arouse the consciousness of influential Sufi communities to the danger of political Islam. This cautious has been legitimized by the resentful views that some prominent conservative Sunni scholars hold towards certain Sufi rituals. Additionally, political Islam strives to recreate n Islamized society in accordance with a strict normative ladder that excludes anything that could be considered “bid’ah, or any innovation in religious matters.
