Egypt: when all newspapers say the same thing

Egyptian newspapers ran the same headline when the Egyptian army crossed into Sinai in October 1973. The same happened following the downfall of former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak in the Wake of the January 25 popular revolution. But what was the national justification for a unified headline on the day after the conclusion of the Egypt Economic Development Conference in Sharm el-Sheikh? “Egypt rises,” the unified headline chosen by Egyptian newspapers, was inspired by Egyptian president Abd el-Fattah el-Sisi’s opening remarks in the speech he delivered on the final day of the recent conference. Mass mobilization and “common understanding,” a phrase also used by el-Sisi in an interview with journalists, have thus become the main characteristics of the Egyptian press.
